The Miracle Called Sodium Bicarbonate

Bleach – baking soda thoroughly whitens and reacts well with dirt, which can be useful when hand-washing items such as dirty socks or stained curtains, kitchen towels, and bath towels. You can do this, for example, by mixing baking soda with regular laundry detergent in a ratio of about 4:1 (four parts baking soda), soaking the laundry in warm water, adding the baking soda and detergent mixture, letting it soak for half an hour, and then washing it by hand. For heavily soiled white fabrics, a stronger reaction will occur only after a short, approximately 15-minute boil in this solution.

For cleaning carpets – you can also use baking soda in a solution with laundry gel for hand-cleaning carpets.

For heartburn – this may work as a first-aid remedy for this condition, but be careful – only in a weak concentration. Baking soda will help and provide some relief, but it won’t address the underlying cause – which lies partly in an unbalanced diet and partly in a lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Yes, you read that correctly—a lack of HCl, even though the problem is hyperacidity. Increased acidity in the stomach is primarily caused by waste acids from the metabolic process; conversely, the right acid (hydrochloric acid) eliminates them. So try grating fresh beets, which are a perfect source of (Betaine HCl).

In baking – baking soda cannot completely replace baking powder; they are not the same thing. While it forms the basis of baking powder, to thoroughly leaven the dough we still need some (acid-forming) ingredients that will react with the baking soda. Therefore, it’s best not to experiment with baking soda and instead use tried-and-true baking powders, where everything is already mixed in the correct proportions.

For hair – people wash their hair with many types of shampoos, and often have no idea that inexpensive and completely harmless baking soda can do the same job. It perfectly degreases the hair’s surface, removes impurities that can simply be rinsed away with warm water, and causes no allergic reactions to the substances found in some shampoos.
